School Mission Statement

Providing German-American bicultural, bilingual education since 1960, the John F. Kennedy School is dedicated to serving German- and English-speaking students of all cultures for the purpose of developing—
  • academic excellence,
  • mastery of English and German,
  • independent inquiry,
  • international understanding, and
  • mutual respect.

School Philosophy

The John F. Kennedy School is a bilingual, bicultural German-American public school in Berlin. It offers an integrated elementary and highschool program that combines the strengths of both German and American educational traditions.
Acknowledging and appreciating cultural diversity, the Kennedy School serves German- and English-speaking students of all nations as a means of developing international understanding. German and English are equally respected as the languages of instruction, and the school’s educational program incorporates the essentials of German and American school curricula.
Upholding high academic standards of both educational systems, the Kennedy School gives students an opportunity to learn through different modes and strategies. Promoting learning as a life-long process, the balanced curriculum supports student growth in all areas, including the fine- and performing arts, humanities, languages, sciences, mathematics and athletics.
JFKS works to pioneer curricula that reflect and respond to a changing community and world. In keeping with this spirit of change, the faculty, staff and administration are constantly searching for new ways to challenge JFKS students toward positive intellectual, emotional and social growth.
In guiding students to understand themselves and the world around them, the Kennedy School fosters independent inquiry, critical thinking, open-mindedness and service to others. The school program and learning strategies encourage the development of responsible, democratic citizens. Students, faculty and staff are obligated to be mindful of the dignity and integrity of each individual.
Since its founding, the Kennedy School has strived to embody the finest spirit of international cooperation. Through bilingual education and interaction, we improve our understanding of each other and our different cultures.
In learning about others, we not only learn more about ourselves; we build respect and tolerance for all, an essential component for peace and understanding in the world.
